2025-12-03memstick: Add timeout to prevent indefinite waitingJiayi Li
[ Upstream commit b65e630a55a490a0269ab1e4a282af975848064c ] Add timeout handling to wait_for_completion calls in memstick_set_rw_addr() and memstick_alloc_card() to prevent indefinite blocking in case of hardware or communication failures. 2025-08-28memstick: Fix deadlock by moving removing flag earlierJiayi Li
commit 99d7ab8db9d8230b243f5ed20ba0229e54cc0dfa upstream. The existing memstick core patch: commit 62c59a8786e6 ("memstick: Skip allocating card when removing host") sets host->removing in memstick_remove_host(),but still exists a critical time window where memstick_check can run after host->eject is set but before removing is set. In the rtsx_usb_ms driver, the problematic sequence is: rtsx_usb_ms_drv_remove: memstick_check: host->eject = true cancel_work_sync(handle_req) if(!host->removing) ... memstick_alloc_card() memstick_set_rw_addr() memstick_new_req() rtsx_usb_ms_request() if(!host->eject) skip schedule_work wait_for_completion() memstick_remove_host: [blocks indefinitely] host->removing = true flush_workqueue() [block] 1. rtsx_usb_ms_drv_remove sets host->eject = true 2. cancel_work_sync(&host->handle_req) runs 3. memstick_check work may be executed here <-- danger window 4. memstick_remove_host sets removing = 1 During this window (step 3), memstick_check calls memstick_alloc_card, which may indefinitely waiting for mrq_complete completion that will never occur because rtsx_usb_ms_request sees eject=true and skips scheduling work, memstick_set_rw_addr waits forever for completion. This causes a deadlock when memstick_remove_host tries to flush_workqueue, waiting for memstick_check to complete, while memstick_check is blocked waiting for mrq_complete completion. Fix this by setting removing=true at the start of rtsx_usb_ms_drv_remove, before any work cancellation. This ensures memstick_check will see the removing flag immediately and exit early, avoiding the deadlock. commit 21b34a3a204ed616373a12ec17dc127ebe51eab3 upstream. A new warning in clang [1] points out that id_reg is uninitialized then passed to memstick_init_req() as a const pointer: drivers/memstick/core/memstick.c:330:59: error: variable 'id_reg' is uninitialized when passed as a const pointer argument here [-Werror,-Wuninitialized-const-pointer] 330 | memstick_init_req(&card->current_mrq, MS_TPC_READ_REG, &id_reg, | ^~~~~~ Commit de182cc8e882 ("drivers/memstick/core/memstick.c: avoid -Wnonnull warning") intentionally passed this variable uninitialized to avoid an -Wnonnull warning from a NULL value that was previously there because id_reg is never read from the call to memstick_init_req() in h_memstick_read_dev_id(). Just zero initialize id_reg to avoid the warning, which is likely happening in the majority of builds using modern compilers that support '-ftrivial-auto-var-init=zero'. 2023-06-09treewide: Remove uninitialized_var() usageKees Cook
commit 3f649ab728cda8038259d8f14492fe400fbab911 upstream. Using uninitialized_var() is dangerous as it papers over real bugs[1] (or can in the future), and suppresses unrelated compiler warnings (e.g. "unused variable"). If the compiler thinks it is uninitialized, either simply initialize the variable or make compiler changes. In preparation for removing[2] the[3] macro[4], remove all remaining needless uses with the following script: git grep '\buninitialized_var\b' | cut -d: -f1 | sort -u | \ xargs perl -pi -e \ 's/\buninitialized_var\(([^\)]+)\)/\1/g; s:\s*/\* (GCC be quiet|to make compiler happy) \*/$::g;' drivers/video/fbdev/riva/riva_hw.c was manually tweaked to avoid pathological white-space. No outstanding warnings were found building allmodconfig with GCC 9.3.0 for x86_64, i386, arm64, arm, powerpc, powerpc64le, s390x, mips, sparc64, alpha, and m68k. 2023-04-26memstick: fix memory leak if card device is never registeredGreg Kroah-Hartman
commit 4b6d621c9d859ff89e68cebf6178652592676013 upstream. When calling dev_set_name() memory is allocated for the name for the struct device. Once that structure device is registered, or attempted to be registerd, with the driver core, the driver core will handle cleaning up that memory when the device is removed from the system. Unfortunatly for the memstick code, there is an error path that causes the struct device to never be registered, and so the memory allocated in dev_set_name will be leaked. Fix that leak by manually freeing it right before the memory for the device is freed. [ Upstream commit 42933c8aa14be1caa9eda41f65cde8a3a95d3e39 ] This patch fixes the following issues: 1. memstick_free_host() will free the host, so the use of ms_dev(host) after it will be a problem. To fix this, move memstick_free_host() after when we are done with ms_dev(host). 2. In rtsx_usb_ms_drv_remove(), pm need to be disabled before we remove and free host otherwise memstick_check will be called and UAF will happen. We are getting close to completing this work. Currently, there are only 32 of 2311 of these cases left to be addressed in linux-next. I'm auditing every case; I take a look into the code and analyze it in order to determine if I'm dealing with an actual bug or a false positive, as explained here: https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/c2fad584-1705-a5f2-d63c-824e9b96cf50@embeddedor.com/ While working on this, I've found and fixed the several missing break/return bugs, some of them introduced more than 5 years ago. 2019-04-08drivers: Remove explicit invocations of mmiowb()Will Deacon
mmiowb() is now implied by spin_unlock() on architectures that require it, so there is no reason to call it from driver code. This patch was generated using coccinelle: @mmiowb@ @@ - mmiowb(); and invoked as: $ for d in drivers include/linux/qed sound; do \ spatch --include-headers --sp-file mmiowb.cocci --dir $d --in-place; done NOTE: mmiowb() has only ever guaranteed ordering in conjunction with spin_unlock(). However, pairing each mmiowb() removal in this patch with the corresponding call to spin_unlock() is not at all trivial, so there is a small chance that this change may regress any drivers incorrectly relying on mmiowb() to order MMIO writes between CPUs using lock-free synchronisation. If you've ended up bisecting to this commit, you can reintroduce the mmiowb() calls using wmb() instead, which should restore the old behaviour on all architectures other than some esoteric ia64 systems. 2018-12-17memstick: rtsx_usb_ms: Support runtime power managementKai-Heng Feng
In order to let host's parent device, rtsx_usb, to use USB remote wake up signaling to do card detection, it needs to be suspended. Hence it's necessary to add runtime PM support for the memstick host. To keep memstick host stays suspended when it's not in use, convert the card detection function from kthread to delayed_work, which can be scheduled when the host is resumed and can be canceled when the host is suspended. Put the device to suspend when there's no card and the power mode is MEMSTICK_POWER_OFF. 2018-06-12treewide: kmalloc() -> kmalloc_array()Kees Cook
The kmalloc() function has a 2-factor argument form, kmalloc_array(). This patch replaces cases of: kmalloc(a * b, gfp) with: kmalloc_array(a * b, gfp) as well as handling cases of: kmalloc(a * b * c, gfp) with: kmalloc(array3_size(a, b, c), gfp) as it's slightly less ugly than: kmalloc_array(array_size(a, b), c, gfp) This does, however, attempt to ignore constant size factors like: kmalloc(4 * 1024, gfp) though any constants defined via macros get caught up in the conversion. Any factors with a sizeof() of "unsigned char", "char", and "u8" were dropped, since they're redundant. The tools/ directory was manually excluded, since it has its own implementation of kmalloc(). The Coccinelle script used for this was: // Fix redundant parens around sizeof(). @@ type TYPE; expression THING, E; @@ ( kmalloc( - (sizeof(TYPE)) * E + sizeof(TYPE) * E , ...) | kmalloc( - (sizeof(THING)) * E + sizeof(THING) * E , ...) ) // Drop single-byte sizes and redundant parens. @@ expression COUNT; 2017-11-21treewide: setup_timer() -> timer_setup()Kees Cook
This converts all remaining cases of the old setup_timer() API into using timer_setup(), where the callback argument is the structure already holding the struct timer_list. These should have no behavioral changes, since they just change which pointer is passed into the callback with the same available pointers after conversion. It handles the following examples, in addition to some other variations. Casting from unsigned long: void my_callback(unsigned long data) { struct something *ptr = (struct something *)data; ... } ... setup_timer(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, ptr); and forced object casts: void my_callback(struct something *ptr) { ... } ... setup_timer(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, (unsigned long)ptr); become: void my_callback(struct timer_list *t) { struct something *ptr = from_timer(ptr, t, my_timer); ... } ... timer_setup(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, 0); Direct function assignments: void my_callback(unsigned long data) { struct something *ptr = (struct something *)data; ... } ... ptr->my_timer.function = my_callback; have a temporary cast added, along with converting the args: void my_callback(struct timer_list *t) { struct something *ptr = from_timer(ptr, t, my_timer); ... } ... ptr->my_timer.function = (TIMER_FUNC_TYPE)my_callback; And finally, callbacks without a data assignment: void my_callback(unsigned long data) { ... } ... setup_timer(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, 0); have their argument renamed to verify they're unused during conversion: void my_callback(struct timer_list *unused) { ... } ... timer_setup(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, 0); The conversion is done with the following Coccinelle script: spatch --very-quiet --all-includes --include-headers \ -I ./arch/x86/include -I ./arch/x86/include/generated \ -I ./include -I ./arch/x86/include/uapi \ -I ./arch/x86/include/generated/uapi -I ./include/uapi \ -I ./include/generated/uapi --include ./include/linux/kconfig.h \ --dir . \ --cocci-file ~/src/data/timer_setup.cocci @fix_address_of@ expression e; 2017-11-13Merge branch 'timers-core-for-linus' of ↵Linus Torvalds
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip Pull timer updates from Thomas Gleixner: "Yet another big pile of changes: - More year 2038 work from Arnd slowly reaching the point where we need to think about the syscalls themself. - A new timer function which allows to conditionally (re)arm a timer only when it's either not running or the new expiry time is sooner than the armed expiry time. This allows to use a single timer for multiple timeout requirements w/o caring about the first expiry time at the call site. - A new NMI safe accessor to clock real time for the printk timestamp work. Can be used by tracing, perf as well if required. - A large number of timer setup conversions from Kees which got collected here because either maintainers requested so or they simply got ignored. As Kees pointed out already there are a few trivial merge conflicts and some redundant commits which was unavoidable due to the size of this conversion effort. - Avoid a redundant iteration in the timer wheel softirq processing. - Provide a mechanism to treat RTC implementations depending on their hardware properties, i.e. don't inflict the write at the 0.5 seconds boundary which originates from the PC CMOS RTC to all RTCs. No functional change as drivers need to be updated separately. - The usual small updates to core code clocksource drivers. 2017-11-02drivers/memstick: Convert timers to use timer_setup()Kees Cook
In preparation for unconditionally passing the struct timer_list pointer to all timer callbacks, switch to using the new timer_setup() and from_timer() to pass the timer pointer explicitly. 2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches.
