2026-02-25arm64: io: Rename ioremap_prot() to __ioremap_prot()Will Deacon
Rename our ioremap_prot() implementation to __ioremap_prot() and convert all arch-internal callers over to the new function. ioremap_prot() remains as a #define to __ioremap_prot() for generic_access_phys() and will be subsequently extended to handle user permissions in 'prot'. 2025-11-07arm64: acpi: Drop message logging SPCR default consolePunit Agrawal
Commit f5a4af3c7527 ("ACPI: Add acpi=nospcr to disable ACPI SPCR as default console on ARM64") introduced a command line parameter to prevent using SPCR provided console as default. It also introduced a message to log this choice. Drop the message as it is not particularly useful and can be incorrect in situations where no SPCR is provided by the firmware. Commit bad3fa2fb920 ("ACPI: Suppress misleading SPCR console message when SPCR table is absent") mistakenly assumes acpi_parse_spcr() returning 0 to indicate a failure to parse SPCR. While addressing the resultant incorrect logging it was deemed that dropping the message is a better approach as it is not particularly useful. 2025-09-11arm64: ptrace: Replace interrupts_enabled() with regs_irqs_disabled()Jinjie Ruan
The generic entry code expects architecture code to provide regs_irqs_disabled(regs) function, but arm64 does not have this and provides interrupts_enabled(regs), which has the opposite polarity. In preparation for moving arm64 over to the generic entry code, relace arm64's interrupts_enabled() with regs_irqs_disabled() and update its callers under arch/arm64. For the moment, a definition of interrupts_enabled() is provided for the GICv3 driver. Once arch/arm implement regs_irqs_disabled(), this can be removed. Delete the fast_interrupts_enabled() macro as it is unused and we don't want any new users to show up. No functional changes. 2025-07-01ACPI: Suppress misleading SPCR console message when SPCR table is absentLi Chen
The kernel currently alway prints: "Use ACPI SPCR as default console: No/Yes " even on systems that lack an SPCR table. This can mislead users into thinking the SPCR table exists on the machines without SPCR. With this change, the "Yes" is only printed if the SPCR table is present, parsed and !param_acpi_nospcr. This avoids user confusion on SPCR-less systems. 2025-03-16mm/ioremap: pass pgprot_t to ioremap_prot() instead of unsigned longRyan Roberts
ioremap_prot() currently accepts pgprot_val parameter as an unsigned long, thus implicitly assuming that pgprot_val and pgprot_t could never be bigger than unsigned long. But this assumption soon will not be true on arm64 when using D128 pgtables. In 128 bit page table configuration, unsigned long is 64 bit, but pgprot_t is 128 bit. Passing platform abstracted pgprot_t argument is better as compared to size based data types. Let's change the parameter to directly pass pgprot_t like another similar helper generic_ioremap_prot(). Without this change in place, D128 configuration does not work on arm64 as the top 64 bits gets silently stripped when passing the protection value to this function. 2021-09-23Revert "ACPI: Add memory semantics to acpi_os_map_memory()"Jia He
This reverts commit 437b38c51162f8b87beb28a833c4d5dc85fa864e. The memory semantics added in commit 437b38c51162 causes SystemMemory Operation region, whose address range is not described in the EFI memory map to be mapped as NormalNC memory on arm64 platforms (through acpi_os_map_memory() in acpi_ex_system_memory_space_handler()). This triggers the following abort on an ARM64 Ampere eMAG machine, because presumably the physical address range area backing the Opregion does not support NormalNC memory attributes driven on the bus. 2021-08-25ACPI: Add memory semantics to acpi_os_map_memory()Lorenzo Pieralisi
The memory attributes attached to memory regions depend on architecture specific mappings. For some memory regions, the attributes specified by firmware (eg uncached) are not sufficient to determine how a memory region should be mapped by an OS (for instance a region that is define as uncached in firmware can be mapped as Normal or Device memory on arm64) and therefore the OS must be given control on how to map the region to match the expected mapping behaviour (eg if a mapping is requested with memory semantics, it must allow unaligned accesses). Rework acpi_os_map_memory() and acpi_os_ioremap() back-end to split them into two separate code paths: acpi_os_memmap() -> memory semantics acpi_os_ioremap() -> MMIO semantics The split allows the architectural implementation back-ends to detect the default memory attributes required by the mapping in question (ie the mapping API defines the semantics memory vs MMIO) and map the memory accordingly. 2021-06-01arm64: acpi: Map EFI_MEMORY_WT memory as Normal-NCWill Deacon
The only user we have of Normal Write-Through memory is in the ACPI code when mapping memory regions advertised as EFI_MEMORY_WT. Since most (all?) CPUs treat write-through as non-cacheable under the hood, don't bother with the extra memory type here and just treat EFI_MEMORY_WT the same way as EFI_MEMORY_WC by mapping it to the Normal-NC memory type instead and emitting a warning if we have failed to find an alternative EFI memory type. 2020-09-30arm64: permit ACPI core to map kernel memory used for table overridesArd Biesheuvel
Jonathan reports that the strict policy for memory mapped by the ACPI core breaks the use case of passing ACPI table overrides via initramfs. This is due to the fact that the memory type used for loading the initramfs in memory is not recognized as a memory type that is typically used by firmware to pass firmware tables. Since the purpose of the strict policy is to ensure that no AML or other ACPI code can manipulate any memory that is used by the kernel to keep its internal state or the state of user tasks, we can relax the permission check, and allow mappings of memory that is reserved and marked as NOMAP via memblock, and therefore not covered by the linear mapping to begin with. 2020-07-14arm64/acpi: disallow writeable AML opregion mapping for EFI code regionsArd Biesheuvel
Given that the contents of EFI runtime code and data regions are provided by the firmware, as well as the DSDT, it is not unimaginable that AML code exists today that accesses EFI runtime code regions using a SystemMemory OpRegion. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with that, but since we take great care to ensure that executable code is never mapped writeable and executable at the same time, we should not permit AML to create writable mapping. 2020-07-14arm64/acpi: disallow AML memory opregions to access kernel memoryArd Biesheuvel
AML uses SystemMemory opregions to allow AML handlers to access MMIO registers of, e.g., GPIO controllers, or access reserved regions of memory that are owned by the firmware. Currently, we also allow AML access to memory that is owned by the kernel and mapped via the linear region, which does not seem to be supported by a valid use case, and exposes the kernel's internal state to AML methods that may be buggy and exploitable. On arm64, ACPI support requires booting in EFI mode, and so we can cross reference the requested region against the EFI memory map, rather than just do a minimal check on the first page. So let's only permit regions to be remapped by the ACPI core if - they don't appear in the EFI memory map at all (which is the case for most MMIO), or - they are covered by a single region in the EFI memory map, which is not of a type that describes memory that is given to the kernel at boot. 2020-05-19arm64: acpi: Make apei_claim_sea() synchronise with APEI's irq workJames Morse
APEI is unable to do all of its error handling work in nmi-context, so it defers non-fatal work onto the irq_work queue. arch_irq_work_raise() sends an IPI to the calling cpu, but this is not guaranteed to be taken before returning to user-space. Unless the exception interrupted a context with irqs-masked, irq_work_run() can run immediately. Otherwise return -EINPROGRESS to indicate ghes_notify_sea() found some work to do, but it hasn't finished yet. With this apei_claim_sea() returning '0' means this external-abort was also notification of a firmware-first RAS error, and that APEI has processed the CPER records. 2020-01-22arm64: acpi: fix DAIF manipulation with pNMIMark Rutland
Since commit: d44f1b8dd7e66d80 ("arm64: KVM/mm: Move SEA handling behind a single 'claim' interface") ... the top-level APEI SEA handler has the shape: 1. current_flags = arch_local_save_flags() 2. local_daif_restore(DAIF_ERRCTX) 3. <GHES handler> 4. local_daif_restore(current_flags) However, since commit: 4a503217ce37e1f4 ("arm64: irqflags: Use ICC_PMR_EL1 for interrupt masking") ... when pseudo-NMIs (pNMIs) are in use, arch_local_save_flags() will save the PMR value rather than the DAIF flags. The combination of these two commits means that the APEI SEA handler will erroneously attempt to restore the PMR value into DAIF. Fix this by factoring local_daif_save_flags() out of local_daif_save(), so that we can consistently save DAIF in step #1, regardless of whether pNMIs are in use. Both commits were introduced concurrently in v5.0. 2019-02-07arm64: KVM/mm: Move SEA handling behind a single 'claim' interfaceJames Morse
To split up APEIs in_nmi() path, the caller needs to always be in_nmi(). Add a helper to do the work and claim the notification. When KVM or the arch code takes an exception that might be a RAS notification, it asks the APEI firmware-first code whether it wants to claim the exception. A future kernel-first mechanism may be queried afterwards, and claim the notification, otherwise we fall through to the existing default behaviour. The NOTIFY_SEA code was merged before considering multiple, possibly interacting, NMI-like notifications and the need to consider kernel first in the future. Make the 'claiming' behaviour explicit. Restructuring the APEI code to allow multiple NMI-like notifications means any notification that might interrupt interrupts-masked code must always be wrapped in nmi_enter()/nmi_exit(). This will allow APEI to use in_nmi() to use the right fixmap entries. Mask SError over this window to prevent an asynchronous RAS error arriving and tripping 'nmi_enter()'s BUG_ON(in_nmi()). (diagnosis) * This fault is a data abort, alignment fault (ESR=0x96000021) during reading out ACPI table. * Initial ACPI tables are normally stored in system ram and marked as "ACPI Reclaim memory" by the firmware. * After the commit f56ab9a5b73c ("efi/arm: Don't mark ACPI reclaim memory as MEMBLOCK_NOMAP"), those regions are differently handled as they are "memblock-reserved", without NOMAP bit. * So they are now excluded from device tree's "usable-memory-range" which kexec-tools determines based on a current view of /proc/iomem. * When crash dump kernel boots up, it tries to accesses ACPI tables by mapping them with ioremap(), not ioremap_cache(), in acpi_os_ioremap() since they are no longer part of mapped system ram. * Given that ACPI accessor/helper functions are compiled in without unaligned access support (ACPI_MISALIGNMENT_NOT_SUPPORTED), any unaligned access to ACPI tables can cause a fatal panic. With this patch, acpi_os_ioremap() always honors memory attribute information provided by the firmware (EFI) and retaining cacheability allows the kernel safe access to ACPI tables. 2018-02-07ACPI: SPCR: Make SPCR available to x86Prarit Bhargava
SPCR is currently only enabled or ARM64 and x86 can use SPCR to setup an early console. General fixes include updating Documentation & Kconfig (for x86), updating comments, and changing parse_spcr() to acpi_parse_spcr(), and earlycon_init_is_deferred to earlycon_acpi_spcr_enable to be more descriptive. On x86, many systems have a valid SPCR table but the table version is not 2 so the table version check must be a warning. On ARM64 when the kernel parameter earlycon is used both the early console and console are enabled. On x86, only the earlycon should be enabled by by default. Modify acpi_parse_spcr() to allow options for initializing the early console and console separately. 2016-12-21ACPI / osl: Remove acpi_get_table_with_size()/early_acpi_os_unmap_memory() usersLv Zheng
This patch removes the users of the deprectated APIs: acpi_get_table_with_size() early_acpi_os_unmap_memory() The following APIs should be used instead of: acpi_get_table() acpi_put_table() The deprecated APIs are invented to be a replacement of acpi_get_table() during the early stage so that the early mapped pointer will not be stored in ACPICA core and thus the late stage acpi_get_table() won't return a wrong pointer. The mapping size is returned just because it is required by early_acpi_os_unmap_memory() to unmap the pointer during early stage. But as the mapping size equals to the acpi_table_header.length (see acpi_tb_init_table_descriptor() and acpi_tb_validate_table()), when such a convenient result is returned, driver code will start to use it instead of accessing acpi_table_header to obtain the length. Thus this patch cleans up the drivers by replacing returned table size with acpi_table_header.length, and should be a no-op. 2016-09-28ARM64: ACPI: enable ACPI_SPCR_TABLEAleksey Makarov
SBBR mentions SPCR as a mandatory ACPI table. So enable it for ARM64 Earlycon should be set up as early as possible. ACPI boot tables are mapped in arch/arm64/kernel/acpi.c:acpi_boot_table_init() that is called from setup_arch() and that's where we parse SPCR. So it has to be opted-in per-arch. When ACPI_SPCR_TABLE is defined initialization of DT earlycon is deferred until the DT/ACPI decision is done. Initialize DT earlycon if ACPI is disabled. 2016-04-26arm64: acpi: add acpi=on cmdline option to prefer ACPI boot over DTArd Biesheuvel
If both ACPI and DT platform descriptions are available, and the kernel was configured at build time to support both flavours, the default policy is to prefer DT over ACPI, and preferring ACPI over DT while still allowing DT as a fallback is not possible. Since some enterprise features (such as RAS) depend on ACPI, it may be desirable for, e.g., distro installers to prefer ACPI boot but fall back to DT rather than failing completely if no ACPI tables are available. So introduce the 'acpi=on' kernel command line parameter for arm64, which signifies that ACPI should be used if available, and DT should only be used as a fallback. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm Pull power management and ACPI updates from Rafael Wysocki: "Quite a new features are included this time. First off, the Collaborative Processor Performance Control interface (version 2) defined by ACPI will now be supported on ARM64 along with a cpufreq frontend for CPU performance scaling. Second, ACPI gets a new infrastructure for the early probing of IRQ chips and clock sources (along the lines of the existing similar mechanism for DT). Next, the ACPI core and the generic device properties API will now support a recently introduced hierarchical properties extension of the _DSD (Device Specific Data) ACPI device configuration object. If the ACPI platform firmware uses that extension to organize device properties in a hierarchical way, the kernel will automatically handle it and make those properties available to device drivers via the generic device properties API. It also will be possible to build the ACPICA's AML interpreter debugger into the kernel now and use that to diagnose AML-related problems more efficiently. In the future, this should make it possible to single-step AML execution and do similar things. Interesting stuff, although somewhat experimental at this point. Finally, the PM core gets a new mechanism that can be used by device drivers to distinguish between suspend-to-RAM (based on platform firmware support) and suspend-to-idle (or other variants of system suspend the platform firmware is not involved in) and possibly optimize their device suspend/resume handling accordingly. In addition to that, some existing features are re-organized quite substantially. First, the ACPI-based handling of PCI host bridges on x86 and ia64 is unified and the common code goes into the ACPI core (so as to reduce code duplication and eliminate non-essential differences between the two architectures in that area). Second, the Operating Performance Points (OPP) framework is reorganized to make the code easier to find and follow. Next, the cpufreq core's sysfs interface is reorganized to get rid of the "primary CPU" concept for configurations in which the same performance scaling settings are shared between multiple CPUs. Finally, some interfaces that aren't necessary any more are dropped from the generic power domains framework. On top of the above we have some minor extensions, cleanups and bug fixes in multiple places, as usual. Specifics: - ACPICA update to upstream revision 20150930 (Bob Moore, Lv Zheng). The most significant change is to allow the AML debugger to be built into the kernel. On top of that there is an update related to the NFIT table (the ACPI persistent memory interface) and a few fixes and cleanups. - ACPI CPPC2 (Collaborative Processor Performance Control v2) support along with a cpufreq frontend (Ashwin Chaugule). This can only be enabled on ARM64 at this point. - New ACPI infrastructure for the early probing of IRQ chips and clock sources (Marc Zyngier). - Support for a new hierarchical properties extension of the ACPI _DSD (Device Specific Data) device configuration object allowing the kernel to handle hierarchical properties (provided by the platform firmware this way) automatically and make them available to device drivers via the generic device properties interface (Rafael Wysocki). - Generic device properties API extension to obtain an index of certain string value in an array of strings, along the lines of of_property_match_string(), but working for all of the supported firmware node types, and support for the "dma-names" device property based on it (Mika Westerberg). - ACPI core fix to parse the MADT (Multiple APIC Description Table) entries in the order expected by platform firmware (and mandated by the specification) to avoid confusion on systems with more than 255 logical CPUs (Lukasz Anaczkowski). - Consolidation of the ACPI-based handling of PCI host bridges on x86 and ia64 (Jiang Liu). - ACPI core fixes to ensure that the correct IRQ number is used to represent the SCI (System Control Interrupt) in the cases when it has been re-mapped (Chen Yu). - New ACPI backlight quirk for Lenovo IdeaPad S405 (Hans de Goede). - ACPI EC driver fixes (Lv Zheng). - Assorted ACPI fixes and cleanups (Dan Carpenter, Insu Yun, Jiri Kosina, Rami Rosen, Rasmus Villemoes). - New mechanism in the PM core allowing drivers to check if the platform firmware is going to be involved in the upcoming system suspend or if it has been involved in the suspend the system is resuming from at the moment (Rafael Wysocki). This should allow drivers to optimize their suspend/resume handling in some cases and the changes include a couple of users of it (the i8042 input driver, PCI PM). - PCI PM fix to prevent runtime-suspended devices with PME enabled from being resumed during system suspend even if they aren't configured to wake up the system from sleep (Rafael Wysocki). - New mechanism to report the number of a wakeup IRQ that woke up the system from sleep last time (Alexandra Yates). - Removal of unused interfaces from the generic power domains framework and fixes related to latency measurements in that code (Ulf Hansson, Daniel Lezcano). - cpufreq core sysfs interface rework to make it handle CPUs that share performance scaling settings (represented by a common cpufreq policy object) more symmetrically (Viresh Kumar). This should help to simplify the CPU offline/online handling among other things. - cpufreq core fixes and cleanups (Viresh Kumar). - intel_pstate fixes related to the Turbo Activation Ratio (TAR) mechanism on client platforms which causes the turbo P-states range to vary depending on platform firmware settings (Srinivas Pandruvada). - intel_pstate sysfs interface fix (Prarit Bhargava). - Assorted cpufreq driver (imx, tegra20, powernv, integrator) fixes and cleanups (Bai Ping, Bartlomiej Zolnierkiewicz, Shilpasri G Bhat, Luis de Bethencourt). - cpuidle mvebu driver cleanups (Russell King). - OPP (Operating Performance Points) framework code reorganization to make it more maintainable (Viresh Kumar). - Intel Broxton support for the RAPL (Running Average Power Limits) power capping driver (Amy Wiles). - Assorted power management code fixes and cleanups (Dan Carpenter, Geert Uytterhoeven, Geliang Tang, Luis de Bethencourt, Rasmus Villemoes)" * tag 'pm+acpi-4.4-rc1-1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rafael/linux-pm: (108 commits) cpufreq: postfix policy directory with the first CPU in related_cpus cpufreq: create cpu/cpufreq/policyX directories cpufreq: remove cpufreq_sysfs_{create|remove}_file() cpufreq: create cpu/cpufreq at boot time cpufreq: Use cpumask_copy instead of cpumask_or to copy a mask cpufreq: ondemand: Drop unnecessary locks from update_sampling_rate() PM / Domains: Merge measurements for PM QoS device latencies PM / Domains: Don't measure ->start|stop() latency in system PM callbacks PM / clk: Fix broken build due to non-matching code and header #ifdefs ACPI / Documentation: add copy_dsdt to ACPI format options ACPI / sysfs: correctly check failing memory allocation ACPI / video: Add a quirk to force native backlight on Lenovo IdeaPad S405 ACPI / CPPC: Fix potential memory leak ACPI / CPPC: signedness bug in register_pcc_channel() ACPI / PAD: power_saving_thread() is not freezable ACPI / PM: Fix incorrect wakeup IRQ setting during suspend-to-idle ACPI: Using correct irq when waiting for events ACPI: Use correct IRQ when uninstalling ACPI interrupt handler cpuidle: mvebu: disable the bind/unbind attributes and use builtin_platform_driver cpuidle: mvebu: clean up multiple platform drivers ...
