2023-08-16alpha: remove __init annotation from exported page_is_ram()Masahiro Yamada
commit 6ccbd7fd474674654019a20177c943359469103a upstream. EXPORT_SYMBOL and __init is a bad combination because the .init.text section is freed up after the initialization. Commit c5a130325f13 ("ACPI/APEI: Add parameter check before error injection") exported page_is_ram(), hence the __init annotation should be removed. This fixes the modpost warning in ARCH=alpha builds: WARNING: modpost: vmlinux: page_is_ram: EXPORT_SYMBOL used for init symbol. Remove __init or EXPORT_SYMBOL. 2023-03-17alpha: fix R_ALPHA_LITERAL reloc for large modulesEdward Humes
[ Upstream commit b6b17a8b3ecd878d98d5472a9023ede9e669ca72 ] Previously, R_ALPHA_LITERAL relocations would overflow for large kernel modules. This was because the Alpha's apply_relocate_add was relying on the kernel's module loader to have sorted the GOT towards the very end of the module as it was mapped into memory in order to correctly assign the global pointer. While this behavior would mostly work fine for small kernel modules, this approach would overflow on kernel modules with large GOT's since the global pointer would be very far away from the GOT, and thus, certain entries would be out of range. This patch fixes this by instead using the Tru64 behavior of assigning the global pointer to be 32KB away from the start of the GOT. The change made in this patch won't work for multi-GOT kernel modules as it makes the assumption the module only has one GOT located at the beginning of .got, although for the vast majority kernel modules, this should be fine. Of the kernel modules that would previously result in a relocation error, none of them, even modules like nouveau, have even come close to filling up a single GOT, and they've all worked fine under this patch. 2023-03-11alpha: fix FEN fault handlingAl Viro
commit 977a3009547dad4a5bc95d91be4a58c9f7eedac0 upstream. Type 3 instruction fault (FPU insn with FPU disabled) is handled by quietly enabling FPU and returning. Which is fine, except that we need to do that both for fault in userland and in the kernel; the latter *can* legitimately happen - all it takes is this: .global _start _start: call_pal 0xae lda $0, 0 ldq $0, 0($0) - call_pal CLRFEN to clear "FPU enabled" flag and arrange for a signal delivery (SIGSEGV in this case). Fixed by moving the handling of type 3 into the common part of do_entIF(), before we check for kernel vs. user mode. Incidentally, the check for kernel mode is unidiomatic; the normal way to do that is !user_mode(regs). The difference is that the open-coded variant treats any of bits 63..3 of regs->ps being set as "it's user mode" while the normal approach is to check just the bit 3. PS is a 4-bit register and regs->ps always will have bits 63..4 clear, so the open-coded variant here is actually equivalent to !user_mode(regs). Harder to follow, though... 2023-02-06exit: Add and use make_task_dead.Eric W. Biederman
commit 0e25498f8cd43c1b5aa327f373dd094e9a006da7 upstream. There are two big uses of do_exit. The first is it's design use to be the guts of the exit(2) system call. The second use is to terminate a task after something catastrophic has happened like a NULL pointer in kernel code. Add a function make_task_dead that is initialy exactly the same as do_exit to cover the cases where do_exit is called to handle catastrophic failure. In time this can probably be reduced to just a light wrapper around do_task_dead. For now keep it exactly the same so that there will be no behavioral differences introducing this new concept. Replace all of the uses of do_exit that use it for catastraphic task cleanup with make_task_dead to make it clear what the code is doing. As part of this rename rewind_stack_do_exit rewind_stack_and_make_dead. Signed-off-by: "Eric W. [ Upstream commit caace6ca4e06f09413fb8f8a63319594cfb7d47d ] This issue was noticed while debugging a shutdown issue where some secondary CPUs are not being shutdown correctly. A fix for that [1] requires that secondary cpus be offlined using the cpu_online_mask so that the stop operation is a no-op if CPU HOTPLUG is disabled. I, like the author in [1] looked at the architectures and found that alpha is one of two architectures that executes smp_send_stop() on all possible CPUs. On alpha, smp_send_stop() sends an IPI to all possible CPUs but only needs to send them to online CPUs. Send the stop IPI to only the online CPUs. 2018-02-16alpha: fix crash if pthread_create races with signal deliveryMikulas Patocka
commit 21ffceda1c8b3807615c40d440d7815e0c85d366 upstream. On alpha, a process will crash if it attempts to start a thread and a signal is delivered at the same time. The crash can be reproduced with this program: https://cygwin.com/ml/cygwin/2014-11/msg00473.html The reason for the crash is this: * we call the clone syscall * we go to the function copy_process * copy process calls copy_thread_tls, it is a wrapper around copy_thread * copy_thread sets the tls pointer: childti->pcb.unique = regs->r20 * copy_thread sets regs->r20 to zero * we go back to copy_process * copy process checks "if (signal_pending(current))" and returns -ERESTARTNOINTR * the clone syscall is restarted, but this time, regs->r20 is zero, so the new thread is created with zero tls pointer * the new thread crashes in start_thread when attempting to access tls The comment in the code says that setting the register r20 is some compatibility with OSF/1. But OSF/1 doesn't use the CLONE_SETTLS flag, so we don't have to zero r20 if CLONE_SETTLS is set. This patch fixes the bug by zeroing regs->r20 only if CLONE_SETTLS is not set. 2018-01-23alpha/PCI: Fix noname IRQ level detectionLorenzo Pieralisi
commit 86be89939d11a84800f66e2a283b915b704bf33d upstream. The conversion of the alpha architecture PCI host bridge legacy IRQ mapping/swizzling to the new PCI host bridge map/swizzle hooks carried out through: commit 0e4c2eeb758a ("alpha/PCI: Replace pci_fixup_irqs() call with host bridge IRQ mapping hooks") implies that IRQ for devices are now allocated through pci_assign_irq() function in pci_device_probe() that is called when a driver matching a device is found in order to probe the device through the device driver. Alpha noname platforms required IRQ level programming to be executed in sio_fixup_irq_levels(), that is called in noname_init_pci(), a platform hook called within a subsys_initcall. In noname_init_pci(), present IRQs are detected through sio_collect_irq_levels() that check the struct pci_dev->irq number to detect if an IRQ has been allocated for the device. By the time sio_collect_irq_levels() is called, some devices may still have not a matching driver loaded to match them (eg loadable module) therefore their IRQ allocation is still pending - which means that sio_collect_irq_levels() does not programme the correct IRQ level for those devices, causing their IRQ handling to be broken when the device driver is actually loaded and the device is probed. Fix the issue by adding code in the noname map_irq() function (noname_map_irq()) that, whilst mapping/swizzling the IRQ line, it also ensures that the correct IRQ level programming is executed at platform level, fixing the issue. As a side effect of converting PCI IRQ allocation to the struct pci_host_bridge {map/swizzle}_irq() hooks mechanism, the actual PCI IRQ allocation function (ie pci_assign_irq()) is carried out per-device in pci_device_probe() that is called when a PCI device driver is about to be probed. This means that, for drivers compiled as loadable modules, the actual PCI device IRQ allocation can now happen after the system has booted so the struct pci_host_bridge {map/swizzle}_irq() hooks pci_assign_irq() relies on must stay valid after the system has booted so that PCI core can carry out PCI IRQ allocation correctly. Most of the alpha board structures pci_map_irq() and pci_swizzle() hooks (that are used to initialize their struct pci_host_bridge equivalent through the alpha_mv global variable - that represents the struct alpha_machine_vector of the running kernel) are marked as __init/__initdata; this causes freed memory dereferences when PCI IRQ allocation is carried out after the kernel has booted (ie when loading PCI drivers as loadable module) because when the kernel tries to bind the PCI device to its (module) driver, the function pci_assign_irq() is called, that in turn retrieves the struct pci_host_bridge {map/swizzle}_irq() hooks to carry out PCI IRQ allocation; if those hooks are marked as __init code/__initdata they point at freed/invalid memory. Fix the issue by removing the __init/__initdata markers from all subarch struct alpha_machine_vector.pci_map_irq()/pci_swizzle() functions (and data). git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace Pull namespace updates from Eric Biederman: "Life has been busy and I have not gotten half as much done this round as I would have liked. I delayed it so that a minor conflict resolution with the mips tree could spend a little time in linux-next before I sent this pull request. This includes two long delayed user namespace changes from Kirill Tkhai. It also includes a very useful change from Serge Hallyn that allows the security capability attribute to be used inside of user namespaces. The practical effect of this is people can now untar tarballs and install rpms in user namespaces. It had been suggested to generalize this and encode some of the namespace information information in the xattr name. Upon close inspection that makes the things that should be hard easy and the things that should be easy more expensive. Then there is my bugfix/cleanup for signal injection that removes the magic encoding of the siginfo union member from the kernel internal si_code. The mips folks reported the case where I had used FPE_FIXME me is impossible so I have remove FPE_FIXME from mips, while at the same time including a return statement in that case to keep gcc from complaining about unitialized variables. I almost finished the work to get make copy_siginfo_to_user a trivial copy to user. The code is available at: git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace.git neuter-copy_siginfo_to_user-v3 But I did not have time/energy to get the code posted and reviewed before the merge window opened. I was able to see that the security excuse for just copying fields that we know are initialized doesn't work in practice there are buggy initializations that don't initialize the proper fields in siginfo. 2017-09-04alpha: marvel: make use of raw_spinlock variantsJulia Cartwright
The alpha/marvel code currently implements an irq_chip for handling interrupts; due to how irq_chip handling is done, it's necessary for the irq_chip methods to be invoked from hardirq context, even on a a real-time kernel. Because the spinlock_t type becomes a "sleeping" spinlock w/ RT kernels, it is not suitable to be used with irq_chips. A quick audit of the operations under the lock reveal that they do only minimal, bounded work, and are therefore safe to do under a raw spinlock. 2017-08-03alpha/PCI: Replace pci_fixup_irqs() call with host bridge IRQ mapping hooksLorenzo Pieralisi
The pci_fixup_irqs() function allocates IRQs for all PCI devices present in a system; those PCI devices possibly belong to different PCI bus trees (and possibly rooted at different host bridges) and may well be enabled (ie probed and bound to a driver) by the time pci_fixup_irqs() is called when probing a given host bridge driver. Furthermore, current kernel code relying on pci_fixup_irqs() to assign legacy PCI IRQs to devices does not work at all for hotplugged devices in that the code carrying out the IRQ fixup is called at host bridge driver probe time, which just cannot take into account devices hotplugged after the system has booted. The introduction of map/swizzle function hooks in struct pci_host_bridge allows us to define per-bridge map/swizzle functions that can be used at device probe time in PCI core code to allocate IRQs for a given device (through pci_assign_irq()). Convert PCI host bridge initialization code to the pci_scan_root_bus_bridge() API (that allows to pass a struct pci_host_bridge with initialized map/swizzle pointers) and remove the pci_fixup_irqs() call from arch code. 2017-07-19signal/alpha: Document a conflict with SI_USER for SIGTRAPEric W. Biederman
Setting si_code to __SI_FAULT results in a userspace seeing an si_code of 0. This is the same si_code as SI_USER. Posix and common sense requires that SI_USER not be a signal specific si_code. As such this use of 0 for the si_code is a pretty horribly broken ABI. Given that alpha is on it's last legs I don't know that it is worth fixing this, but it is worth documenting what is going on so that no one decides to copy this bad decision. This was introduced during the 2.5 development cycle so this mess has had a long time for people to be able to depend upon it. v2: Added FPE_FIXME for alpha as Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de> pointed out with his alternate patch one of the cases is SIGFPE not SIGTRAP.
