To initialize node, zone and memory map data structures every architecture
calls free_area_init() during setup_arch() and passes it an array of zone
limits.

Beside code duplication it creates "interesting" ordering cases between
allocation and initialization of hugetlb and the memory map. Some
architectures allocate hugetlb pages very early in setup_arch() in certain
cases, some only create hugetlb CMA areas in setup_arch() and sometimes
hugetlb allocations happen mm_core_init().

With arch_zone_limits_init() helper available now on all architectures it
is no longer necessary to call free_area_init() from architecture setup
code. Rather core MM initialization can call arch_zone_limits_init() in a
single place.

This allows to unify ordering of hugetlb vs memory map allocation and
initialization.

Remove the call to free_area_init() from architecture specific code and
place it in a new mm_core_init_early() function that is called immediately
after setup_arch().

After this refactoring it is possible to consolidate hugetlb allocations
and eliminate differences in ordering of hugetlb and memory map
initialization among different architectures.

As the first step of this consolidation move hugetlb_bootmem_alloc() to
mm_core_early_init().

Move calculations of zone limits to a dedicated arch_zone_limits_init()
function.

Later MM core will use this function as an architecture specific callback
during nodes and zones initialization and thus there won't be a need to
call free_area_init() from every architecture.

Patch series "Add and use memdesc_flags_t".

At some point struct page will be separated from struct slab and struct
folio. This is a step towards that by introducing a type for the 'flags'
word of all three structures. This gives us a certain amount of type
safety by establishing that some of these unsigned longs are different
from other unsigned longs in that they contain things like node ID,
section number and zone number in the upper bits. That lets us have
functions that can be easily called by anyone who has a slab, folio or
page (but not easily by anyone else) to get the node or zone.

There's going to be some unusual merge problems with this as some odd bits
of the kernel decide they want to print out the flags value or something
similar by writing page-&gt;flags and now they'll need to write page-&gt;flags.f
instead. That's most of the churn here. Maybe we should be removing
these things from the debug output?

This patch (of 11):

Wrap the unsigned long flags in a typedef. In upcoming patches, this will
provide a strong hint that you can't just pass a random unsigned long to
functions which take this as an argument.

Add text patching api's to use in subsequent jump_label implementation. We use
a new fixmap FIX_TEXT_POKE0 entry to temporarily override MMU mappings to allow
read only text pages to be written to.

Previously, __set_fix was marked with __init as it was only used during the
EARLYCON stage. Now that TEXT_POKE mappings require post-init usage
(e.g., FIX_TEXT_POKE0), keeping __init would cause runtime bugs whenset_fixmap
accesses invalid memory. Thus, we remove the __init flag to ensure __set_fix
remains valid beyond initialization.

A new function patch_insn_write is exposed to allow single instruction patching.

<title>mm: call ctor/dtor for kernel PTEs</title>

<id>urn:sha1:49f5996664201a3581ee5ea5949ee7d5fafb9d86</id>
<content type='text'>
Since [1], constructors/destructors are expected to be called for all page
table pages, at all levels and for both user and kernel pgtables. There
is however one glaring exception: kernel PTEs are managed via separate
helpers (pte_alloc_kernel/pte_free_kernel), which do not call the [cd]tor,
at least not in the generic implementation.

The most obvious reason for this anomaly is that init_mm is special-cased
not to use split page table locks. As a result calling ptlock_init() for
PTEs associated with init_mm would be wasteful, potentially resulting in
dynamic memory allocation. However, pgtable [cd]tors perform other
actions - currently related to accounting/statistics, and potentially more
functionally significant in the future.

Now that pagetable_pte_ctor() is passed the associated mm, we can make it
skip the call to ptlock_init() for init_mm; this allows us to call the
ctor from pte_alloc_one_kernel() too. This is matched by a call to the
pgtable destructor in pte_free_kernel(); no special-casing is needed on
that path, as ptlock_free() is already called unconditionally.
(ptlock_free() is a no-op unless a ptlock was allocated for the given
PTP.)

This patch ensures that all architectures that rely on
&lt;asm-generic/pgalloc.h&gt; call the [cd]tor for kernel PTEs.
pte_free_kernel() cannot be overridden so changing the generic
implementation is sufficient. pte_alloc_one_kernel() can be overridden
using __HAVE_ARCH_PTE_ALLOC_ONE_KERNEL, and a few architectures implement
it by calling the page allocator directly. We amend those so that they
call the generic __pte_alloc_one_kernel() instead, if possible, ensuring
that the ctor is called.

A few architectures do not use &lt;asm-generic/pgalloc.h&gt;; those will be
taken care of separately.

According to the OpenRISC architecture manual, the dcache and icache may
not be present. When these caches are present, the invalidate and flush
registers may be absent. The current implementation does not perform
checks to verify their presence before utilizing cache registers, or
invalidating and flushing cache blocks.

Introduce new functions to detect the presence of cache components and
related special-purpose registers.

There are a few places where a range of addresses have to be flushed or
invalidated and the implementation is duplicated. Introduce new utility
functions and macros that generalize this implementation and reduce
duplication.

<title>arch, mm: make releasing of memory to page allocator more explicit</title>

The point where the memory is released from memblock to the buddy
allocator is hidden inside arch-specific mem_init()s and the call to
memblock_free_all() is needlessly duplicated in every artiste cure and
after introduction of arch_mm_preinit() hook, mem_init() implementation on
many architecture only contains the call to memblock_free_all().

Pull memblock_free_all() call into mm_core_init() and drop mem_init() on
relevant architectures to make it more explicit where the free memory is
released from memblock to the buddy allocator and to reduce code
duplication in architecture specific code.

high_memory defines upper bound on the directly mapped memory. This bound
is defined by the beginning of ZONE_HIGHMEM when a system has high memory
and by the end of memory otherwise.

All this is known to generic memory management initialization code that
can set high_memory while initializing core mm structures.

Add a generic calculation of high_memory to free_area_init() and remove
per-architecture calculation except for the architectures that set and use
high_memory earlier than that.
